Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
I only run when being chased… now with that being said I also have a big problem saying NO. So 2 months ago when my friends from my Monday Boot Camp class asked me to run in a relay race early on a Sunday morning in September I wanted to say no but reluctantly said yes. I figured I would somehow bow out of it by then….wrong! Sunday, September 21st arrives fast and my alarm is going off at 6am (not as bad as the usual 3am but still not welcome on a weekend sleep-in day). I drag myself to Piedmont Park to run 3.5 miles in the Ekiden Relay Race… Here’s the details; long distance team relays, called ekidens, were started in Japan in the 17th century. Atlanta’s version of it consists of teams of six members, each person runs one leg of the race to complete the 30K. May I remind you, I don’t train for running, I workout and exercise, but running is for those other people with long skinny legs…
I’m like J-Lo running a marathon except she ran for 22.5 more miles than me and my butt is not as round!
Anyway, you can really feel how hilly Atlanta is when you are not in a car… I was the second person on our team to run. The first guy did his 3.5 miles in 20 minutes so he gave me a head start. That’s what I thought. But about 50 people passed me while I was running and it felt like my legs were in quicksand. Not to mention by mile marker one, I was ready to stop at the closest French bistro for a bit of the bubble.
I stayed strong and in the end, my time was 29:49 and I felt like a million bucks when it was over. Will I do it again? Hey, like I said, I only run when chased. So yes, when is the next race? Count me in!

Me turning the bend into Piedmont Park and almost at the finish line. I actually thought the gold shoes would make me run faster, but no, that was Olympian Michael Johnson who runs fast with gold shoes on.

“Team Henry” ran in honor of our Boot Camp instructor. We love you Henry!
