Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

I only run when being chased… now with that being said I also have a big problem saying NO.  So 2 months ago when my friends from my Monday Boot Camp class asked me to run in a relay race early on a Sunday morning in September I wanted to say no but reluctantly said yes. I figured I would somehow bow out of it by then….wrong! Sunday, September 21st arrives fast and my alarm is going off at 6am (not as bad as the usual 3am but still not welcome on a weekend sleep-in day).  I drag myself to Piedmont Park to run 3.5 miles in the Ekiden Relay Race… Here’s the details; long distance team relays, called ekidens, were started in Japan in the 17th century.  Atlanta’s version of it consists of teams of six members, each person runs one leg of the race to complete the 30K.  May I remind you, I don’t train for running, I workout and exercise, but running is for those other people with long skinny legs…

I’m like J-Lo running a marathon except she ran for 22.5 more miles than me and my butt is not as round!

Anyway, you can really feel how hilly Atlanta is when you are not in a car… I was the second person on our team to run. The first guy did his 3.5 miles in 20 minutes so he gave me a head start. That’s what I thought. But about 50 people passed me while I was running and it felt like my legs were in quicksand.  Not to mention by mile marker one, I was ready to stop at the closest French bistro for a bit of the bubble.

I stayed strong and in the end, my time was 29:49 and I felt like a million bucks when it was over. Will I do it again? Hey, like I said, I only run when chased.  So yes, when is the next race? Count me in!

Me turning the bend into Piedmont Park and almost at the finish line. I actually thought the gold shoes would make me run faster, but no, that was Olympian Michael Johnson who runs fast with gold shoes on.

“Team Henry” ran in honor of our Boot Camp instructor. We love you Henry!

Halloween Queen

In my opinion there are really only 2 holidays where you can get ultra creative  … one is Christmas and the other is Halloween.

Christmas because, well aside from making onesies for your baby Jesus statue,  there are parties to plan, special meals to make, sparkly fashion to wear, presents to buy and, ooooh the house to decorate… I could go on for miles about the effort that goes into creating the perfect Christmas season…but I’ll wait a few weeks.

Right now, on deck, my 2nd favorite holiday…HALLOWEEN! I have a weird knack for making outrageous costumes that look like you just walked off a Hollywood set. And every year it gets worse… I one time went so far as to go on a 4 week diet before the big day so I would look stunning in my Las Vegas Showgirl outfit.  It was so believable that no one would talk to me… people were waiting around all night to see my show meanwhile, I stood in a corner alone. I’ve been Uncle Sam, Wonder Woman, the Golden Greek Goddess of Glove Prize fighter, Bubbles the Power Puff Girl, Marie Antoinette (I carrying that damn cake around all night) and by the way, I win a prize every year.

So I was a natural fit when the Peachtree TV “JJ on Atlanta” show came calling for some Halloween advice… I spent the good part of a day at Turner Studios yesterday prepping all things Halloween. I turned out a 3 year old skunk, a 12 year old version of “Static Cling” and a twenty something (very sexy) Medusa.

They also needed me to make decorations and food… and I needed an INTERN!  It was a lot of work but in the end it was perfect. I made gauzy ghosts, boa bats, and candy baggies that double as take-home treats.  For the food, I got creative with candy and fruit to turn out Apple Bites, Cheesy String fingers, carrot eyeballs, and Candy bar spiders.

Now over a month in advance I am all ready for the holiday and my house is Halloween central.  Maybe I’ll just start Christmas so I can be onto Ground Hogs Day before the New Year?

Move over Martha… the JJ on Atlanta Halloween Show airs on Peachtree TV on Sunday, October 26th at 7am.

Trick or Treat!

Style Council

The highly anticipated, long awaited September issue of the Atlanta Peach Magazine is finally out on news stands. As one of 16 people chosen as Atlanta’s most stylish I am honored to be included…  and even better, I dont hate the photos!  In fact, the entire feature is fun, interesting and extremely sexy!

As part of the feature we had to answer a few questions about our personal style and as a fancy magzine stays true to their editorial form they cut most of mine responses.  But since you’re here and they are not, I’ve included my complete thoughts on ’style’ for you below… and some highly sought after beauty secrets too.

Being fashionable is an everyday state of mind…

so enjoy life and all the price tags that come with expensive shoes!

Name: Jane Monzures

Occupation: Morning Show co-host on 929 Dave fm, Designer JEM-Stone Couture (ww.Jem-Stone.com)

Style Philosophy: I define personal style as a reflection of your inner being… it’s your every role. What you want to portray to the world around is what you’re wearing on your body. Mine is about my character, my mindset, and about what makes me feel good about me! In a word…“Hip-lectic”.

Go-To Shoes: Today, Beige Stacked Lanvin pumps that I got at Jeffrey… they are stunning, go with everything and make a statement. And tomorrow… Jimmy Choo’s are Janey’s Shoes!

In My Makeup Bag: Studio Fix powder from MAC, Smolder and Ebony eyeliners from MAC, L’oreal Voluminous mascara and, a must, dental floss.

Beauty Secrets: Eight Greens Youth Serum by Eminence Organics Skin Care; it is the fountain of youth in a bottle, for a perfectly sun-kissed tan try Kiehl’s sun-free sun-tanning formula and because your lips are the only hip thing to be plump…lip pumping gloss.

Closet Staple: basic black crew neck cotton t-shirt is simple and easy for those days when you have nothing to wear and my “skinny jeans” because they have two meanings.

Style Splurges: SHOES…I was once featured in Women’s Wear Daily Confessions of a Shoe Addict article because of my obsession… money is not object when it comes to a great pair of shoes.

Signature Fragrance: Armani Code by Giorgio Armani

Must have for Fall: Black high-waist trouser pant, extra long length and a tuxedo style blouse in red with lots of ruffles.

Style Icon: Madonna because she’s not afraid, Patricia Field because she has a great eye for color and texture and APHRODITE the Greek Goddess of love because she makes being naked fashionable too.

Go Bears…. I mean Falcons!

The NFL season has begun so that means good bye Zakk, good bye George and good bye dating season… the only way to get a solid date now is to agree to cook food for Sunday’s game and brush up on last week’s stats. It’s a good thing I know what a special team is, that Dante Culpepper used to play for Minnesota, Brett Favre now plays for the Jets and Kyle Orton is the starting QB for the Bears.

Because I work at a radio station that is the official broadcast home of the Atlanta Falcons I decided it would be in my best interest to go to the first home game of this reestablished team… of course that means I get the perks too!

Pre-game I had to pick up my tickets from a tent in a hot gravel parking lot (yep, almost decided to turn around after I got grit in my open toed Manolo Blaniks!) but I survived… and quickly went inside the GA Dome! Things get better now… after being searched like going thru security at an airport I put on my luggage tags and was escorted to the field!  I entered the field behind the players and got to stand in the enzone while the guys stretched (not a bad gig if you can get it!). Then I was greeted by my friends, The Falcons Cheerleaders, and decided that #32 Jerious Norwood is my new favorite player! The vibe in the place was contagious!

Once we got close to game time I headed up to the suite where I was greeted by lots of delicious food, cushy seats and BEER!

The game was fun… I actually watched it and we won! I think I might be a new fan! Ok, let’s not get crazy here we’ll see if they beat Tampa Bay next Sunday first!Oh and, by the way, I went home and watched the Bears late into the night because you can take the girl away from her team but you can’t take the team spirit away from the girl! GO BEARS!

Not making the cut.

For all you non-sportos please allow me to share my analogy of getting “cut” from a football team … it’s sort of like peeling an orange.

Even though you want the entire orange to stay together sometimes it’s just not possible. So, the players that get cut are like the skin you peel from the orange.  Once you discard the peel you have a cohesive unit to work with. Now, the peel can either be thrown out (like players who quit the league all together) or used in some other capacity perhaps in another recipe like stew which then is much like when a player gets picked up by another team.

You see it doesn’t work out the same when you peel a banana because the banana peel isn’t always used for other things unless of course you throw it on the ground and use it to make someone slip but typically people are nicer than that.  And the banana is made up of only one main piece whereas the orange is made up of several slices creating a team.

All things are the same it’s just a matter on how you slice it, right coach?
